Dude, do you even understand how the Internet works?!

Some guy named James Meeley who got linked by When Fangirls Attack is throwing a fit and demanding that they not link to him, apparently because he got banned from one of their sites and he now hates their guts because he’s a wacko.

Please cease and desist linking to my blog. I do not need, nor want, your help. I will find an audience on my own. Thank you.

He starts off sounding merely rude and/or ignorant of the internet and quickly deteriorates into Grade A Asshole. As usual with the a-hole variety, he demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the world in some (or many) ways. If this is how he acts online over something so inconsequential, I can only imagine how deranged he must get in real life when things don’t go his way. The guy’s 32 years old and on his second blog. He’s been around long enough to understand how the internet works. Seriously, you can’t stop anyone from linking to your site (not files, site) if it’s publically accessible. If you write something on the internet and publish it for all the world to see, you look pretty silly if you get mad at people when they read and link to your site. That’s what the internet is for. What makes his ire so unwarrented is that a) the content of his post is unlikely to inspire WFA readers to harrass him about it, and b) the owners of WFA do not comment on the sites they link.

That’s the beauty of WFA: they don’t judge. Ever. No matter how moronic your post may be =) From their first post:

We started this blog because we noticed the large amount of posts on the subejct of Women in comics, how to get female readers, misogyny in comics, over the Blogosphere.

We thought it would be an interesting project to catalogue them. This way all of the points and counterpoints are in one place for if you want to seriosuly think about and research the subject. So, here we are.

It’s neither a badge of honor nor a reaction to your opinion to be linked by WFA. Your post just has to relate, however tangentally, to women in comics. (My “squee” at being linked by them, below, is not because I think “they liked what I said!” but because I read WFA every single day and I adore being mentioned by sites I like.)

I can only gawk at this guy’s stubborn refusal to accept that he cannot control who gets to read his site or who links his site. That’s what it all boils down to: he’s pissed that someone won’t do whatever he tells them. His intro post on his current blog reflects this controlling attitude (visitors must have a “civil tongue”?!). Numerous commenters have suggested (with far more kindness than he deserves) that he use a service that provides more privacy, but he just responds with hostility. A quick Google search of his name (which I will not state here, because he probably googles himself) reveals that he pisses off people wherever he goes. It’s quite the talent!

*[Sept 17/06] Turns out this James Meeley is a recurring poster who resurfaces every few months to say something offensive, get called on it, throw a temper tantrum, and delete his blog and all posts he’s made on other’s sites. The behavior exhibited on the WFA post is nothing new. I first witnessed him being a patronizing misogynist on the Where’s My Adolescent Power Fantasy? post, but I didn’t find out until today that it’s the same guy. Check out Fandom Wank for a rundown on the dramafest.

It occurs to me that the only way he can be sure that WFA isn’t linking to his site is to monitor WFA…which is run by the two people he said he would have nothing to with…sounds like he’s made a whip for his own back…

On the other hand, giving the wide expanse of the internet, how big a loss could not linking to ONE site be? Or would this be seen as ‘the thin edge of the wedge’, if you know what I mean?

Yeah I don’t think Blogger tells you which links are linking back so one would have to check the page every day =)

The site’s a link directory; if they started removing sites because people don’t want to be linked it could end up pretty one-sided. It would defeat the whole purpose, which is to link as many different points of view as possible and to give a sort of snapshot of an ongoing conversation about comics. You never know what you’re going to get when you read thru the WFA lists: that’s what makes it so interesting!

“…if they started removing sites because people don’t want to be linked it could end up being pretty one-sided.” Yeah, that’s what I thought…

“You never know what you’re going to get when you read thru the WFA lists…” So, WFA is sort of like a box of chocolates? :p

Seriously, I know what you mean…one link tends to lead to another and before you know it, a couple of hours has disappeared…
