Review: Supergirl #10

What did you think?

There are a couple comments on the previous post about the issue, but I figured I should start dedicating posts to the discussion of each month’s issue – now that they’ve stopped being so bad I wasn’t buying them ;-)

Here’s what I posted to the Girl Wonder thread for #10:

“Re: Kara’s just up and leaving at the end. Yes, it’s the easy way out, but it’s also what we’d all want to do in that situation, and it’s far more believable than Kara wasting her time there pretending to be an average jane (although I was really expecting the story to last at least 2 issues. The ending came out of nowhere, and Kara’s Inspirational Speech felt flat – just who did she think wasn’t “acting like themselves”?). The “alien teenager who goes to high school to get assimilated” is a cliche that annoys me a great deal (it pops up a lot in anime).

The “all teenage girls are skinny, white and generally blond, except for the obligatory ostracized fat girl” bugged me a lot.

All in all, it could have been much better given a lot more time. I quite enjoyed seeing Kara in high school – it’s the first time we’ve gotten to see a decent number of female characters in an issue – and I have zero interest in the Outsiders. I would have also really enjoyed watching Kara learn just how frikkin’ sexist this world is, and being pissed off at that. She’s very sheltered from the real world by the superheroes she spends all her time with, so she’s out of touch with real life as women live it.”

Overall I did enjoy the issue (as I stated in my previous comment) but that doesn’t mean there weren’t lots of issues I had with it.

  1. Okay, for those of you just tuning in…:P

I like the fact that Cassie is part of the supporting cast…it gives Kara a bit of perspective and a sounding board…Boomer, I’m still unsure about…I get a creepy vibe from him. I also like that they’re doing a ‘slow reveal’ to highlight the similarities between her past and present…if all her memories are true, she’s a candidate for PTSD.

On the other hand, I get the continuing feeling that no one knows what to do with Kara. Most of the previous issues seemed like she was a guest in her own title…and the next few solicited seem to follow this pattern. It would be nice to have a continuing storyline, so that it feels that there is development, rather than ‘done in one’ issues that make her seem like she has a short attention span(unless that’s what they’re trying to do).

Overall, I’m still cautiously optimistic. There have been signs of improvement in the last couple of issues…I’m just getting impatient waiting for a coherent direction and storyline to develop.

  2. Well, the reason why I didn’t like issue #10 wasn’t so much of the plot of the story, that I actually liked and was let down because is was a rush job. Every ‘act,’ so to speak, was a quick 1,2 in and out. No real detail in it, she so quickly becomes the “in” girl.

More so then that, everything was just so predictable … when Kara enters the lunch room, I thought I was watching Mean Girls … When Kara invites the ‘fat’ girl to the sleep over you just knew it was going to end bad … when you see Kara talking to the boy and the other girl looking over at them, you knew what was coming next. The ending was the only part I didn’t see coming. Just ripping off the costume of “Claire” and fly off as Supergirl was a little bit of a shock, BUT what she said was like “huh?” … “what?”

But it wasn’t all bad, those two little frames where Boomer says “Damn that’s cold how fat is she” after Kara told him what happened to the fat girl, and then Kara chucks the TV at him, that was funny.

Also the flashbacks are very interesting. I would really love to explore those more.

And just a little “what the heck” moment … can you believe that Supergirls skirt is so short that it can be hidden under her school skirt, that too was also very short?

It wasn’t bad, I was just let down, but not so much that I won’t get issue #11 … I just hope it isn’t as late coming out as this one was.

  3. Gotta agree with pretty much everything you both said. This series continues to be a real mixed bag.

(Dare I admit that Churchill’s art is actually growing on me?)

Unfortunately, the next issue’s been bumped to November 15 *pulls out hair in frustration* Maybe it’s just as well if each issue is self-contained.

  4. I think if I would have read your comments about issue 11 not coming out until the 15th of Nov I would have been PO’ed … but the 15th doesn’t seem so far away. :)
