Review: Supergirl #12

It took me a week to actually pick #12 up from my stack and read it, long after I’d read all my other comics – I was dreading the experience of reading Supergirl that much.

So how was it? It was fine. I didn’t throw anything. Nothing much happened, which I wouldn’t have minded so much in a series with an intense ongoing plot, like Legion. The art was adorable – Amanda Connor should have been illustrating Supergirl from Day One, instead of the overrated fanboywanks of Michael Turner and Ian Churchill.

My opinion on this issue can be summed up in a comment I made on Fortress of Fortitude:

Apart from the (adorable) art, this issue of Supergirl (#12) was no great shakes, but compared to the toxic waste dump that was #11, it’s comics GOLD. It also makes the sudden jump in behavior between #10 and #11 make a lot more sense, which makes me wonder why they published the “Sharks ‘n’ Lolipron” story *before* Super Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

I was left scratching my head over why this issue and last were published in the order they were. There’s even an editorial note alluding to the fact that this issue takes place immediately after #10 as clearly even DC realized that this issue makes NO SENSE coming off the previous issue. I wish, oh I wish, that this would have been the issue we got instead of #11. Not only was that repulsive on every level, it’s now apparent that there *was* story missing that was needed to bridge the gap between #10 and #11.

Sadly I fear that this issue came too late for most people reading Supergirl. Either they stopped reading in disgust after #11, or, like me, picked up this issue just for Amanda Connor and enjoyed it somewhat, but were too haunted by the horror that had come before to enjoy it with a clear mind. And that pisses me off: that I couldn’t even enjoy a fluffy, fun issue with cute art because the series to date has left such a bad taste. Which is why I’ve yet to pick up issue #13 which came out last week. Knowing me, I’ll probably pick it up next time I’m in the store. How else can I complain about it? =)

  1. I agree…#12 was a fun done-in-one story that was greatly helped by Conner’s art…the guy at my LCS is convinced that this series won’t make it past #24 due to the up and down nature of the storytelling…one issue good, the next bad…never really showing much overall direction…

As for #13…the cover art and interior art is better…I didn’t hate Supergirl as much as I did in #11…it looks like the orange tabby that’s been hanging around(Streaky? ;-)) has found a friend…more backstory told through flashbacks…overall, it was better than #11, though that’s not saying much…:-p

I’ll probably stay with the series for the long haul…if only to see whether it goes anywhere…

  2. Hi! :D

I rly like your blog since I :| I just wish that Supergirl still wasn’t so self-centred. :\ I’m tired of hearing her whine about how nobody understands her and how she doesn’t want to be Supergirl. Nobody’s forcing her to wear that costume :S

Also… I wanna punch Captain Boomerang in the face.. am I the only one? XD

Neways, compared to 11 it’s def gold XD But I just think this series and Supergirl could be so much more, but they’re clearly more interested in appealing to the 16 y/o boy crowd and how they percieve girls, than writing her for real girls :(

    Neways… great review! :)

  3. Hmm that seemed to cut off :\ I wanted to say “since I’m a huge fan of Supergirl and her reappearance in Batman/Superman is the reason I’m back into comics. :)

  4. I’m so behind. December was such a busy month for me personal and at work. I’m packing up to move to another state and damn it’s eating into my comic book reading time. I actually don’t even have the cash to spend right now. But it’s glad to know that with Supergirl I won’t be behind … or am I behind since issues 12 should have been issue 11, and issue 11 should have been issue 12 (if you ask me issue 11 never should have taken place at all). So the question is will issue 13 pick up where issue 11 left off, or where issue 12 left off. So if it picks up where issue 11 left off what do I really have to look forward to?

    Did anyone get that?

What DC should have done is started issue 12 with SuperG getting up from bed saying “what a bad dream, yuke fish.” Why I didn’t get a job with DC is beyond me.

So from what you all say issue 12 is fun, with nice art but no story.

LOVE what you’ve done with the blog!

  5. on the DC message boards it seemed that not too many people were enjoying Amanda Conner’s art(a lot of complaints were said towards her art being too ‘catoony’). pffft, i loved Conner’s art. finally Supergirl looked strong & sexy, instead of emaciated and slutty. oh well, DC don’t know what they’re missing. *sighs* it shouldn’t be this hard to like a Supergirl comic book.

  6. If the DC message boards fanboy-collective doesn’t like something, it must be good =) I bet those same people loved the art in #11.
