Help the writers, don’t buy DVDs?

This is old news, but I haven’t been paying close attention to the writers’ strike lately.

During the strike everybody’s been saying that they’re watching a lot of DVDs instead. But maybe we shouldn’t be buying new DVD sets because it means a nice bit of money for the producers (and very little for the writers)? Or watching streaming episodes – the producers get money from that too (I generally can’t do that anyway, since most American TV web sites block non-American visitors from viewing any video content these days, even next episode trailers. Idiots.)

Tanya Huff says one of the things the writers are trying to do is “get their pittance raised to a slightly larger pittance — I think it’s a change from four cents to eight”. So buying up tons of DVDs during the strike might not be the best way to support the writers/stick it to the producers, if that’s what you want to do.

Hat tip to Tanya Huff (author of the Blood Ties books)
