It’s been a rough couple of weeks at work for me, so I’m a bit late on posting these. The 8th PoC SF Carnival was posted last Friday: Intra-Racial Dialogue; What Lies Between Us. As Willow describes it,
This 8th Carnival has PoC discussing being PoC and SF fans. It’s a lot of Meta, a lot of thinking. And while it may no longer be filled with conversations you (general) knew nothing about – given that discussions on race and SF and fans seems to be happening more and more – it is a perspective that’s internal and unique.
The 20th Feminist SF Carnival was also posted last month, but I didn’t see much of interest in it aside from the discovery that Luke Skywalker was originally supposed to be a girl. And while I’m very interested in examining the misogyny and sexism present in shoujo manga (“Women and Sexism in American and Japanese Comics”), especially when so many Anglo readers seem to think it’s just 100% peachy-keen woman-friendly because it’s written by women for girls, I’m not so fond of arm-chair discussions of Japanese culture by “Western” readers whose knowledge comes mostly from other (non-Asian) fans’ second- and third-hand accounts. Been there, done that myself (not a lot, and not for a very long time, thankfully). It’s kind of embarrassing to watch.
Feel free to submit an entry to the next round, expanding on that argument, if you wish. Or write to the author of the piece?
I just may submit something by Oyceter, if it hasn’t been linked already. Thanks! (I’m not going to write an essay myself because that would just be another white girl writing about stuff she doesn’t really know ;-)
