Yes, I really am behind on all this news =)
Newsarama: Robinson & Didio on Justice League
Hat tip to Supergirl Comic Box Commentary
I’m sort of just rolling with all the many books and teams that Supergirl’s appearing in these days. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts! This new spin-off Justice League has such a weird grab-bag of characters that I’m rather amused at the thought of them trying to interact. The team features Supergirl, Batwoman, and 5 guys I’m not interested in *lol* It’s not headed by the two female characters, sadly, but Hal Jordan Green Lantern and Green Arrow. They start off forming this team for a specific goal, which is a nice change. [Edited to add: this impression may be more reflective of the books I read than actual recent trends. Ignore at your discretion!] I couldn’t get interested in the latest reboot of Justice League of America for many reasons, one of them being – who cares? They’re the JLA, they’re always around, who cares about them “re-forming”.
Given the personality of the current Supergirl, I can see her being interested in a pro-active vengeance mission. This’ll be the first Justice-blank team she’s ever been on. Such as it is. But wow, the girl sure isn’t reticent about working with new people. Joining all these groups all the time takes guts. I thought she was a loner!
Considering Batman and Superman heads the League, why shouldn’t Supergirl and Batwoman head this League? >.>;;
Where does Supergirl have the time in between all that partying to join all these groups? xD
I don’t think she’s a loner. On the contrary, I think one of the few consistent character points to the new Supergirl is that she’s hungry for affection and acceptance.
Hey, animated Supergirl was with the Justice League for a while, so why not?
It’s probably a stretch, but I’m kind of hoping she forms a sort of big-sister relationship with Batwoman. Then again, the writer appears to be bored with BW, so he probably won’t do much with her.
You’re right, she is hungry for a place to belong. The difficulty in finding that place has forced her to be a loner at times, but not by her own choice. It’s nice to see her feeling/being accepted more and more.
I can’t imagine Batwoman being very open to a relationship, but I can see Supergirl pushing past her resistance. She already knows how to handle Batman very well. It could work. Which writer is bored with Batwoman? I can’t see why someone would pick her for the team if he were (maybe it was more an editorial decision since Robinson said SG and BW were included “for the iconic emblems”).
Supergirl hasn’t been seen partying for a long time =) She doesn’t go to school or have a civilian job. Joining various superhero teams is like career advancement for her!
Well, Batwoman is a very under-developed character. She’s supposed to receive her own series where presumably she’ll get developed, but in the interview I read about the new JL book (I’d link to it, but Newsarama is down) the writer didn’t seem to have much to say about her.
Ah, there’s something on CBR: “To be honest with you, I am a little hands off with that character. She’s Greg Rucka’s character. She’s in the book to give the book a ‘Bat’ emblem. I don’t really have the greatest handle on her. She’s going to be more off to the side. I don’t want to offend Greg Rucka! Truly, I think he’s a great writer that I respect immensely but Batwoman is his baby to run with. She isn’t going to be as big a personality on the team as Ollie, Hal and Kara.â€
I’m assuming that’s a diplomatic way of saying, “Can’t stand her, Didio made me,” but I may be wrong.
I do find the idea of being “hands off” with a character who’s in your book to be….odd. I can understand him saying “I don’t really have the greatest handle on her” because, at this point, who does. But if he really feels he doesn’t understand the character, why not ask Greg Rucka to explain her to him?
If Greg Rucka’s the only one who can “write” Batwoman, putting her on a team book by another writer, before she gets that definitive solo book, really doesn’t make a lotta sense. Silly DC.
All this talk about being on the book to give it an “emblem” is starting to make me nervous. It really does sound like Didio forced this cast on him.
