New domain name?

I’m thinking of moving this site from supergirl.astraldream.net to maidofmight.net (.com is taken). What do you think? Like it/hate it/don’t think it makes a difference? There would be no need to change links/bookmarks to the site because I would use 301 redirection.

I originally launched this site as a subdomain on astraldream.net, my fansite collective, because all the top level “supergirl” domains were taken already. I’ve long wanted to spin the site off into its own domain, but I held back for a long time partly because I wasn’t sure if the name was right. I’ve always dug the epithet “Maid of Might” and chose it over “Girl of Steel” because “maid” seemed to allow a greater upper age range than “girl” – a word which seems unsuitable for either Linda Danvers or Bronze Age Kara. But it’s an epithet that hails from the Silver/Bronze Age, and I used to worry that the phrase might strike people as a bit dorky. After 8 years, that seems kind of moot =) And over the past few years, attitudes towards the Silver & Bronze ages have shifted (including my own), and I think “Maid of Might” has a certain kitschy charm today.

The only worries I have about “maidofmight.net” are how well it will scan in search results, and branding – it doesn’t have the word “supergirl” in it (I considered “supergirl-maidofmight.net”/com but that feels too long – yes/no?). I also hope that no one sees the domain name in the search results and thinks it’s one of those fetish superheroine sites. :::sigh::: That’s an issue Superman websites never have to worry about.

  1. I don’t think it makes that much of a difference…

How about maidofmight.ca since you’re in Canada?

    I agree that supergirl-maidofmight.net/com/ca is too long…

    Just my two cents… :-)

  2. I think maidofmight.net would work just fine. Most fans of this blog know it as Maid of Might.

    Best of luck!

  3. Hi,

I believe “Supergirl-MaidofMight.net” would be a wise choice for a new weblink/blog-link. It may be a little long character-wise, but it will accurately reflect what the site is about. Ambiguity should be avoided if at all possible. Search results are finicky to begin with and not always accurate. And, for those who mistakenly believe it (or hope it) to be a link to a fetish site of sorts; well, they’ll be in for a big disappointment, won’t they. = )p

  4. I like maidofmight.net. I would remember that. Not so big on “supergirl-maidofmight.net”, that’s a fingerful. (Get it? Mouthful? Fingerful? Nevermind…) As for search engines, not a huge expert on that, but I think it’s all about the meta, so get “supergirl” terms in there, and you’re good. Plus your site is called “Supergirl: Maid of Might”, so that should work. Type “Daredevil” in a search engine and “manwithoutfear.com” shows up. Maybe it doesn’t beat out wiki, but what does? (Plus you’re linked to wiki’s Supergirl article, so it’s all good!)

  5. Lots of interesting ideas! I’m still deciding…

Search results are finicky to begin with and not always accurate.

Ain’t that the truth! Sometimes I really have to scratch my head at Google. I swear they used to return better results a few years ago. Or Technorati – that’s useless. (I’m reading a book called The Search and it’s a lot of fun learning about the history of all the search engines.)

Yep! But I’m actually thinking about the people who don’t want that kind of site being put off =) Probably not an issue for most people, and the meta description makes it clear that it’s not another ‘women+strength=porn’ site.

Google ignores keywords but Yahoo doesn’t (this site rates higher on Yahoo, and higher on Google.com than Google.ca – go figure). Google places a lot of stock in the title, which is why it’s in there ;-)

I love that Daredevil domain name. Awesome.
