What’s the point in buying it any more? Writer changes rarely go well for me, no matter how enthusiastic the outgoing writer is (they’re ALWAYS enthusiastic unless they’re really bitter – and look how well Sean McKeever worked out for Birds of Prey). It is a fundamental failing of superhero comics that management doesn’t understand the value of a consistent devoted writer (when they’re good).
I can’t even be that excited about Simone restarting Birds of Prey (which I only started getting into near the end) because Ed-fucking-Benes is back (stop giving him work!). And he’s already up to his old tricks: the second cover of the new run puts Huntress back into the Jim Lee-designed “Hush” suit with the stupid belly hole, long after Simone got rid of that! (edit: in Birds of Prey #84). Man should be shot. In the stomach. And made to wear that suit.
J. Michael Stracynski is taking over WW and Superman. Not impressed. I’m not one of those people who think he’s god’s gift. Babylon 5 was way overrated.
After Cry For Justice (glad to see the outrage is enormous) I’m happy for James Robinson to be off anything, but this just frees him up to screw up JLA and co-pen the next DC crossover from hell, War of the Supermen, which I am NOT looking forward to. Can these manchildren just grow up already?
I think I was talking about Wonder Woman? Yeah. I’m disheartened. It feels like she just started. I thought it would last forever so much longer! (Although a new Welcome to Tranquility installment is excellent news, you really should check out the first two TPBs!) I was so damn excited when Gail got this gig. It symbolized so much for her to be writing Wonder Woman. Now we’re back to an overrated male writer penning the WW.
I wouldn’t be nearly this upset when a favourite writer leaves one title if most of DC/Marvel writers and editorial weren’t crap. What can you say about an industry where the writers feel so comfortable airing their ignorance in public?
the mass anger about Cry for Justice is so very very gratifying.
Benes inclusion on the new BoP has soured it for me, too.
Yup, same here. The thing about Benes is that he can do faces very well and I adore his facial expressions. What I despise about him are: the butt shots (FIVE a page, FIVE!), the ridiculously short skirts he gives Lady Blackhawk, and the other snarky, twisted angles he gives the gals when they’re fighting. I want Huntress’s full body suit back, I love her (figuratively, as in admire) and feel that it isn’t fair that she’s given a swimsuit with a belly cutout to wear. At least Black Canary has a jacket and fishnets (I think she made fun of Huntress’s outfit too, yay for her!) Anyways, I absolutely adore the Birds of Prey and as much as I love Gail Simone (essentially the Tamora Pierce of the comic book world), I don’t know if I can handle more of Benes’ artwork.
Onto Wonder Woman: I loved Simone’s Wonder Woman! She was fierce, loving, and actually had a heart in her chest instead of the black rock the male writers have penned her with. Cassandra and Donna weren’t just sidekicks; they became part of Wonder Woman’s family and people she actually thought consciously about and mentioned now and again. Also, I was particularly fond of the artwork in Simone’s Wonder Woman, I don’t know how she did it, but she kept those boys in line! XD Granted I only read like two issues of hers, but the artists were fabulous! I hope the male writer doesn’t ruin the good characterization of Wonder Woman that has been built. I don’t want anymore wonder-thongs or butt shots, please no! Seems like the minute I admit that I love DC, they turn from me and Marvel starts looking up. Life is weird that way.

Agreed. Benes has great skills; if only he would choose to use his powers for good! He needs to be reined way in and have firm lines of what’s acceptable laid down. Like no more gratuitous butt shots.
What I don’t understand is why the Jim Lee Huntress suit is making a reappearance now – far as I know, it hasn’t been seen since 2005. There’s no reason to bring it back (surely it has nothing to do with Jim Lee becoming DC co-publisher this February!)
There were so many good artists on Birds of Prey after Benes left. Anyone of them would have been a better choice. (Nicola Scott being taken up with Secret Six, of course.)
Yes to everything you said on Wonder Woman. The art on this series has been amazing.
