Supergirl Statues & Figures at Toyfair 2010

In February of this year, DC Direct previewed their upcoming 2010 figures at Toyfair 2010. Among the numerous tempting figures on display were a surprising number of Supergirl items. I’m very excited about the first two.

SUPERMAN: NEW KRYPTON: SERIES 1: SUPERWOMAN Action Figure (DC Direct page)

Superwoman statue

There’s a Superwoman action figure being made! She looks fantastic! Here she is on display at Toyfair with Mon-El, Commander El, and Brainiac. These figures look really good. I’m hoping that Alura, Flamebird and Supergirl will appear in future series.

The Superwoman figure stands at 6.75″, features multiple points of articulation, includes a display base and comes in 4-color clamshell blister card packaging.

On Sale October 6, 2010

DC DYNAMICS: SUPERGIRL STATUE (DC Direct page)

DC Dynamics Supergirl Statue

Supergirl gets the DC Dynamics treatment in an amazing-looking deluxe statue (far out of my price range ;) that would be the star in any Supergirl collection. This statue has been advanced-solicited in the DC Solicitations for June 2010.

DC Direct’s exquisite new statue gallery series, featuring dynamic interpretations of classic superheroes, continues!

Award-winning sculptor Tim Bruckner has transformed his original designs of the most recognizable DC heroes into some of the most outstanding, upscale statues DC Direct has ever produced. Each statue features a base that captures the character’s interaction with the surrounding environment.

In this sixth statue in the series, Kara Zor-El celebrates her powers with carefree, youthful exuberance.

This limited-edition, hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain statue measures approximately 11″ high x 5.75″ wide x 7.75″ deep and is packaged in a 4-color box with a 4-color Certificate of Authenticity.

Limited Edition. Manufactured to order.
Advance-solicited; on sale November 3, 2010. $195.00 US

This is a mini version of the 2005 statue designed by Michael Turner.

AME-COMI HEROINE: SUPERGIRL (version 2) PVC FIGURE (DC Direct page)

Ame-Comi Supergirl figure

Kara Zor-El can’t resist smiling at herself when she finds this side-view mirror on the streets of Metropolis.

Sure to be just as popular as the sold-out, original Ame-Comi version of Superman’s cousin, Supergirl (V.2) is a non-articulated PVC statue, standing approximately 8.75″ tall, including a base and packaged in a 4-color window box with J-hook.

DESIGNED AND SCULPTED BY JONATHAN MATTHEWS
Limited Edition. Manufactured to order.
$ 60.00 US | On Sale July 21, 2010

She’s looking at herself in a mirror. A CAR SIDE-VIEW MIRROR. *head explodes* While falling out of her costume at both ends and being posed like a dip. Because DC apparently thinks that “anime-influenced” is code for “pornified”.

This line is an opportunity to break out of the usual American superhero style and borrow elements from anime (more precisely, the problematic “bishoujo” aesthetic) to reinvent familiar characters in a way that’s surprising and exciting. And there’s elements of that – Wonder Woman holding a gorgon’s head, Jade listening to music on lantern-shaped headphones, and a certain aesthetic that’s heavy on seaming, buckles and straps. But looking at the line as a whole, it’s pretty clear that the designer has taken “anime” as a cue to push the boundaries of sexism in the poses, the strangely hard, bulbous breasts, and the insistence on reducing the women’s costumes to as little material as possible. Case in point: Stripper Wonder Girl. In contrast, the first male figure, Batman, seems to be from an entirely different line where men are fully clothed and creepily menacing. This isn’t anything innovative. This is the same gender policing that DC has always pushed in their figures.

BATMAN REBORN: SERIES 1: BATGIRL Action Figure (DC Direct page)

Batgirl action figure

The Stephanie Brown Batgirl action figure, OTOH, is perfection. See her on display at Toyfair.

In one of the most exciting, ongoing comics events in recent years, a cast of familiar characters assumes the mantle of the bat. And out of the events of BATMAN REBORN, a new generation of heroes rise!

The Batgirl figure stands at 5.75″ high.
4-color clamshell packaging. On Sale July 14, 2010
