I like the “P” symbol on January’s Power Girl cover so much!
I’m a bit ‘meh’ on the Supergirl cover – her face doesn’t feel right. Hopefully the final colouring will fix that. (ETA: I totally forgot to mention the elephant in the room: the PINK logo. Why????) I like this month’s cover (#58) much better.
By far my favourite of the “iconic pose and symbol” covers is Batgirl:
I also really like the Steel one-shot:

The pink Supergirl logo makes me roll my eyes so hard they hurt. (It’s pink because she’s a girl, get it? Get it?) I’d love it if they just decided that from here on out, Kara gets to keep…say, yellow as her flagship color, Kon gets red, and Clark gets blue. I’m pretty sure people will still be able to figure out that Supergirl is, in fact, a girl.
I love that Batgirl cover so freaking much, though. :DDDDD
Don’t even get me started on the gendered logo. UGH. That irritates me so much. It clashes so badly with the Supergirl colours. The colourist must be clawing their eyes out at the colour theory fail. (To be truthful, most of the entries in this line, aside from a few standouts like Batgirl, are disappointing. But only Supergirl gets the pink treatment. She never has before – why now?)
Hey, man, this is not new. The pink shield for Supergirl has been around for more than a while. It already is “iconic”. So it makes sense from this point of view to use it.
All these covers look great to me!
The pink shield is not iconic for Supergirl anywhere but in a particular type of merch which has no crossover with the actual character. The pinkified shield has never intruded upon the comics to this point; it’s out of place here.
I can think of some nifty rainbow effects they could have used on the shield using her colours, instead of reaching for the most gender cliched idea possible.
Easy there, Michelle! :D
Ok, you might have a point. Of course I would have prefered to see a golden shield. Or maybe a red&blue one (opposed to red&yellow for Superman). There are so many choices. I’m not saying I like it, I’m just saying that the pink shield does not surprise me, it’s what I would expect from the DC editors for this cover. Why? – because they tend to go for the “cliched ideas”, as you said.
I have Strong Opinions on the pink logo merch :) It’s hard to find merch featuring the traditional colours and actual images of the character, and that’s frustrating.
Plus it doesn’t match. I just can’t forgive that!
There are plenty of options. Why not make it gold like the bracelets? Why not invert the red and yellow? Why not make it red and white rather than pink and white? I find it hard to believe it won’t be changed come publication. It’s caused too much of a hubbub already. I also feel for male readers who will have to pick up something that looks as if its part of the Barbie line. Supergirl is for all ages and all genders.
All good points. I don’t care about the feelings of male readers having to pick up a book with girl-cooties *grin* but I do find it hard to believe that DC would publish a comic with a pink logo because they’re afraid of scaring off that audience.
Fingers crossed that this is just another preliminary mock-up and they’re planning on replacing the logo with something much better.
