Supergirl in the 31st Century

Kara has been a member of two different versions of the Legion in modern continuity: the “Threeboot” Legion which is listed above, and the “New Earth” Legion.

Threeboot Legion (2006-2007)

Supergirl first met the “Threeboot” Legion of Super-Heroes when she travelled through time after being hit by a zeta beam in Infinite Crisis #6 (2006). She arrives in the 31st century in Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #16 believing that she is dreaming her surroundings into existence, to the amusement and consternation of the Legionnaires. Supergirl discovers that in the future she is regarded as a beloved legendary hero, and is soon accepted as a Legion member. Supergirl’s delight at being in the future brings a joyful, optimistic Silver Age vibe to the politically troubled world of the Legion.

Although the series is renamed Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Kara does not play a very active role and only becomes the Legion leader for a short period during The Quest for Cosmic Boy. The story is self-contained and is referenced only in Supergirl #21 and #22 when Kara regains her memories of her time in the future.

A couple years after the conclusion of Supergirl & the Legion of Super-Heroes, DC Comics reintroduced the so-called “original” version of the Legion from the Silver Age. It was retroactively revealed that Kara had shifted universes when she time-travelled to the 31st century, and that the Legion she’d met was not the Legion of her own future. This is revealed in Legion of 3 Worlds #3 (2009), when the adult Brainiac 5 of “New Earth” (Kara’s timeline) explains the matter to the younger Brainiac 5 of the Threeboot Legion, seen in this panel. “New Earth” Brainiac 5 states, in this panel, that the Legion that Supergirl joined is from Earth-Prime, the home of Superboy-Prime.

New Earth Legion (2010)

Supergirl #52 cover

Supergirl meets up with the Legion again during the “Last Stand of New Krypton” storyline that ran across the super family titles in the summer of 2010, only this time it’s the Legion from her own future. In Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #1 (May 2010) she meets up with the Legion and joins their mission to free the imprisoned bottled cities on Brainiac’s ship at the end of Supergirl #51. The story continues in Last Stand of New Krypton #2, where Kara meets an older Brainiac 5 (“Brainy”). In Supergirl #52 (June 2010), Kara and Brainy are teamed up on Brainiac’s ship, but she does not remember him. We learn that this is the “first” time that Kara “met” Brainy, but from his perspective, he has already loved and lost Kara when she died at some point during his past.

Supergirl Annual #2 cover

Supergirl’s actual first meeting with this Legion from their perspective takes place a few months later in Supergirl Annual #2 (December 2010). She becomes a Legionnaire and spends several weeks in the future before returning home, some of her memories having been erased by the Legion after she accidentally discovers how she will eventually die. But Brainiac 5 vows that he will find a way to warn her, and change her fate.

We never learn of Supergirl’s ultimate fate due to DC Comics taking Sterling Gates off the series shortly after this issue. It seems likely that Gates was laying the groundwork for a future storyline that would have involved Supergirl’s death being averted and the Legion’s timeline being changed.
