Supergirl in DC Comics Continuity
This is a chronology, or reading order, of DC comics
dedicated to Supergirl. I’m taking about the new Kara Zor-El from Krypton, who
appeared in 2004. I’ve been adding more and more comics, and now I have practically
every comic related to Supergirl in the list.
It will be specially interesting for those of you who
care about continuity (like I do). There are reasons for having placed every
issue in this order, although I usually don’t mention them -- Sometimes it’s
just some detail, sometimes it just makes sense; and sometimes there are
evident reasons.
The writing indicates the presence of Supergirl
in each issue, like this:
Bold type
--- Supergirl appears in this issue.
Bold type and clear background --- Supergirl (or the team she is a member of)
is/are the main character/s.
Bold & Italics --- Supergirl cameo. --- It’s the case if she
is only on the cover, or just in one panel; and no line of dialogue.
Regular type --- There is no Supergirl at all.
Italics --- Comments.
So if you are a Supergirl fan, you can see
easily the issues in which she appears.
By the way, I’ve got the habit of calling the
characters by name (like Clark, Kara instead of Superman, Supergirl).
I will try to update it from time to time. Today
is September 3, 2008. If you see any mistake or have any suggestion, you can email me.
Enjoy! J

The events related in
Identity Crisis are a turning point for the DC Universe. The death of Sue Dibny
triggered a series of events leading to a crisis of infinite proportions.
To some extent,
Infinite Crisis constitutes a continuation of this minor crisis. That’s why I
set it as the starting point of my chronology.

Kara’s spaceship left
Krypton shortly after her cousin’s. But it was trapped inside a huge chunk of
the planet, and the ship put her in a state of suspended animation. Years
later, this kryptonite asteroid finally heads towards Earth. This is the
leitmotiv of this story arc. In the end, the asteroid is destroyed.

After the asteroid

story arc of Superman/Batman is the first time that Kara Zor-El from Krypton is
introduced in the DC Universe in the present continuity. Remember that all of
what happened before Crisis on Infinite Earths was erased from History.
At the end of this
arc, Kara is introduced to the superhero community and receives her costume.

Hal Jordan, the
greatest of the Green Lanterns, is back. Just in time before the countdown to
Infinite Crisis begins. This story is indeed a turning point for the Green
Lanterns, it revived many elements of the Green Lantern mythos while
introducing some new elements.
Rebirth can be seen
as the first part of a trilogy, being the Sinestro Corps War the
second and “The Blackest Night"
(2009) the third and final part.
III. Countdown to Infinite Crisis
Kara has just arrived
to Earth and an Infinite Crisis is on its way. This is my recommended lecture

IV. Infinite Crisis
This is the chronological
order with the main crossovers and tie-ins of this great DC event. I have also
included the issues with appearances of Supergirl, although some of them (like
Firestorm and the Outsiders) are not so important for the whole.
This means that the
only important tie-ins are the “Special” issues, apart from the Teen Titans
issues that make more dramatic the death of Conner Kent and the JLA issues
which continue from the “World without a Justice League” arc.

V. The year without heroes
k
In the aftermath of Infinite Crisis; Clark, Bruce and
Diana decide to retire temporarily from superhero activity for a while.
However, they are not the only heroes of the DC Universe. Kara is also missing,
she didn’t come back from space. She appears again in the World War III
miniseries.
This weekly series chronicles the events that took
place during the “missing” year.

Kara is also affected by them, but the obsessive ideas about her mission to
kill Kal-El come back (this appeared for the first time in the Supergirl:Power
story arc, by Loeb) and take her out of the fight.
As a consequence,
after things go back to normal, Kara feels afraid of herself and quite messed

Countdown to Final Crisis begins with the death of an
insignificant character: Duela Dent, daughter of the Jokester. She is murdered
by a monitor. In a way, it’s similar to the countdown to Infinite Crisis; which
began the day Ted Kord (another forgotten character) was murdered.
From that day on, the monitors will begin to argue
about the way of dealing with the safety of the Multiverse.

- In Infinite
Crisis #06, Alexander Luthor is about to fuse Earth-Two and Earth-Three
together. Donna Troy and her team make their crucial action and manage to hurt
his hand. A few seconds make all the difference, and thus Nightwing has time to
knock Alexander down the tower. But suddenly, at that moment, they all
disappear.
- In World War
III #02, it’s explained that a zeta beam was activated somehow, but something
went wrong (maybe because of all the energy surrounding the heroes and the instability
of the fabric of space-time, with all those earths floating in space…
whatever): As a result; some heroes are lost in space, Red Tornado explodes,
Cyborg and Firestorm are fused together … and Kara is sent to the future.
There, she meets the Legion of super-heroes and stays with them for over a
year.
- In Supergirl
and the L.O.S.H. #36, Kara is sent back to the past, more precisely to the
World War III. Her memory is erased because it is not safe to remember the
future. In the continuity, everything is as if she had jumped forward in time
from Infinite Crisis #06 to WWIII #02. But from here on she has her memories
back.
However, in Supergirl #22, Karate Kid and Una don’t
remember having met her before. Kara thinks that it must be because her past is
still in their future (In other words, they left the future before she arrived
there) and is worried about having told them about the dominator war. The truth
is that K.K. and Una aren’t members of the Legion she met. There are, in fact,
three legions, each one from a different earth. Maybe Kara was in the future of
another different earth… This will be made clear in the series Final Crisis:
Legion of three worlds.
There is something I still don’t understand: The two
supergirls that are shown returning from the future in WWIII #02. Maybe it has
yet to be explained, or maybe we should just forget about it (because at that
moment nobody in DC seemed to care about it).

In Titans #01, we see
that Donna Troy interrupts the search for Ray Palmer to help her friends. It
doesn’t make much sense, taking into account that in Countdown they challengers

appears again in S/B #50.
We also see that Kara

I believe that from
Supergirl #23 on, the events take place after Countdown to Final Crisis. That’s
because in Action Comics #868 (part of the Superman: Brainiac story) Lois Lane
says something about her recent run-in with Reactron, and because it makes
sense to me.
The end of Countdown
to F.C. basically corresponds to the death of Darkseid. Final Crisis begins
with Orion’s death and the return of Darkseid and the evil Gods. There is a
lapse of time between these events, of undetermined length. According to recent
comments of Morrison, Final Crisis has such a surprising end that practically
all the series that are being published now take place before it starts.

Ok, then, the order
of the Superman & Supergirl storylines would be:
