Photos from Supergirl Episode 12 and a Brief History of Bizarro Supergirl

CBS has released ten photos from the February 1 episode of Supergirl. According to the official episode synopsis, “Kara faces off against her mirror image when Bizarro, a twisted version of Supergirl, sets out to destroy her. Also, Kara grows closer with Cat’s son, Adam (Blake Jenner).”

Actress Hope Lauren, previously seen as the unconscious “Jane Doe” being held by Max Lord, will guest star as Kara’s “imperfect duplicate”. Photos of Bizarro herself have not yet been released, so check back soon for more updates on this episode.

The very first appearance of a Bizarro Supergirl was in the 1960 story “The Son of Bizarro” (Superman #140), where she was created by a “duplicator ray”, became inseparable from a baby Bizarro, and died tragically in very short order.

In the Post-Crisis Supergirl (1996) series, Two-Face kidnapped geneticist Dr. Max Tuefeld and forced him to create an (imperfect) clone of Supergirl from her blood. Bizarro Supergirl responded only to backwards commands (often confusing even herself), had warped versions of Supergirl’s powers, and an even zanier personality than Harley Quinn. She appeared in issues #62-63, 68-69, 72-74 and is one of my favourite characters.

The best known version of Bizarro Supergirl comes from the 2005 Supergirl series, where she is known as Bizarro Girl. Her tale runs through Supergirl #55-57 (available on Comixology) and may be my favourite storyline from the series. Although initially an antagonist who appears on Earth and immediately attacks Supergirl, she soon becomes an ally when Kara recognizes she has the chance to save the Bizarros’ world from destruction, which she couldn’t for New Krypton.
